Course Description

MEM 701 METEOROLOGY

The atmosphere, atmospheric phenomena, climate and climate elements; instrumentation, observation, forecasting and analysis of precipitation and evaporation, thermodynamics of dry air and water vapor.

MEM 702 SOIL AND WATER MANAGEMENT

Management principles and practices as applied to soil and water conservation and management in natural and agricultural resources. Soil erosion and its control; maintenance of soil productivity and land use, planning and management; cropping pattern; plant-soil-water relationships; water use efficiency. Techniques in water and soil analysis.

Physical and biological structures of terrestrial ecosystems, functions, environmental issues and problems. Practices, efforts and strategies in the conservation and protection of terrestrial ecosystems. Field studies/Special Problem.

Principles, concepts and methodologies of biophysical/environmental and socioeconomic impact assessment of natural resource systems, development projects and programs. Skill development in the preparation of an environmental and social impact assessment. Field studies.

Principles of land use planning; resource survey methods and data collection; land and crop suitability evaluation; land use requirements; and integration of data for environmental planning.

Processes of environmental degradation; basic concepts of environmental remediation and restoration; engineering and ecological approaches for environmental remediation and rehabilitation.

Principles, strategies and techniques in environmental education and communication. Lesson planning, module making and multimedia production in environmental community communication pertaining to environmental issues.

Principles and concepts of human impact on the different ecosystems. Approaches and strategies in community participation in relation to environmental issues, problems and management. Environmental values, attitudes, perception and behavior.

Problems and issues at the interface of science and society. Case studies of industry/project specified impacts on society. The societal cost of failures underlying human values, issue of liability and failure prevention strategy are particularly examined.

Field apprentice/work to any terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem, agroecosystem, industry, business enterprise, community/barangay to assess environmental impacts of an environmental problem/issue. Implementation of conservation strategies to mitigate the problems. Preparation of field report.

Exploration and critical review of current issues and problems in natural and agricultural resources and their application to conservation.
